Master the core principles of good violin playing ... Play fluently and confidently with the ViolinSchool Beginner Programs!

Whether you're a first-time beginner, a restarter, or you already play the violin, you'll find a welcoming home at ViolinSchool in London!

Each year, we help hundreds of people to start playing the violin fluently, confidently and with ease.

Our renowned sequence of Classes and Courses will take you from first-time beginner to experienced player, and you can connect with other violinists through our friendly community of musicians - in Central London and online! Read on to find out how ...!

For Starters ... And 'Restarters'!

Violin Fundamentals gives adult learners the best possible start in learning how to play the violin. But it's also perfect as a ‘refresher’ if you've played before (e.g. as a child) and want to come back to the violin. We also recommend Session 2 as a useful revision for any Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced player who wishes to refresh their bowing technique!

We’ll teach you the fundamental principles of how to move your body in a way that allows you to make a beautiful sound on the violin.

We’ll help you understand how to apply technical principles to the music itself, by exploring rhythm, pitch and sound on the violin.

We’ll talk about the basics of performing on the violin, and you’ll learn how to prepare a piece of music to perform confidently to other people!

All classes are relayed ONLINE via Zoom, but you can also attend live at our London School ... if you're in (or visiting) the UK, come and join us in person!

You don’t need to read music! You'll just need access to a violin.

If you don't yet have a violin, click here and we'll help you find one!

Q: How do I join the live classes?
A: You can come in person to our classes in London, or you can join online via Zoom. As soon as you've registered, please email [email protected] to let us know the date you'd like to attend your first session. We'll reply with confirmation and venue address - or, if you're joining us online, with the Zoom link.

Q: Do you offer the class online?
A: Yes, all our classes are relayed live via Zoom, and recorded for replay.

Q: Which sessions should I start with?
A: We always recommend that first-time players start with Session 1. If you can already play the violin a bit, you're welcome to join either session, but the sequence will make more sense if you begin with Session 1!

Q: How many times can I attend the class?
A: Your registration includes one in-person visit for both Session 1 and Session 2, but you are welcome to repeat the class as many times as you wish via Zoom, until you feel you have mastered the topics!

Q: Do I need my own violin?
No, we can provide one for you for the class if you wish! Obviously, if you're attending online you will need a violin. If you don't already have one, click here and we can help you find one that's right for you!

Q: Do I need to read music?
A: No, the Fundamentals classes are taught without music notation. If you'd like to learn how to read music, that is fully included in the Beginner Course A!

Q: How many people are there in each class?
A: We work to a ratio of 8:1 offline, and for online classes with more than 10 participants there is usually a second tutor or presenter available to answer any questions. We always make sure that there is someone from our coaching team available to answer any questions or help you with any instrument or tuning-related issues.

Q: What comes after the Violin Fundamentals Classes?
A: The Violin Fundamentals Classes lead directly on to our popular series Beginner Violin Courses which run three times a year on a termly basis. Course A starts with an introduction to the fingers, so you can learn how to create different notes by stopping the fingers on the string using the left hand.

There are three instalments - Course A, Course B and Course C. Once you've attended the Violin Fundamentals Classes you'll be ready to join Course A, which will give you all the foundational skills to play the violin well at a basic level. If you go on to complete Course B and C, you'll find that - within a year - you can play pretty much any simple melody fluently and beautifully on the violin!

Q: How can I be sure that the Violin Fundamentals Classes are any good?
A: Our director Simon Hewitt Jones developed the workshop as part of his research at the Royal Academy of Music, refining it over several years to create the quickest possible route to playing the violin in tune and in time with a good basic sound. The class (originally known as the 'Beginner Violin Class') has now been running for over 10 years, and has helped literally hundreds of people to get started successfully with the violin!

It works for everyone because it explains the most important 10 or so core principles of violin playing in a really simple way, without getting into the nitty gritty of complex violin technique. So you really can be playing the violin with a good basic sound in just 2 hours!

Q: I’ve never played the violin in my life / I’d love to try this but I’m a bit nervous…
A: Don’t worry at all. You’ll have a great time. Our tutors are really nice and they take the approach that ‘no question is too silly’. Everyone else at the class will be feeling the same as you! But after a couple of minutes, we’ll tell you everything you need to know. You don’t need any experience at all for this class!

Q: I’ve played the violin before. Is this for me?
A: If you played the violin only at beginner level (i.e. no higher than ABRSM exam grades 3-4) and have not touched it for several years, you’ll certainly benefit from the class – so please go ahead and book today!

If you’ve played quite recently, or if you reached higher than ABRSM grade 4-5, then we are likely to recommend that you take the Fundamentals Classes as a refresher, and then go directly to Course B or Course C (or even one of our intermediate courses, or a personalised Restarter Program). The best thing to do is to send us an enquiry then we can recommend the right class for you.

Q: What happens after the Fundamentals Classes / what do I do next?
A: Our 10-week Beginner Violin Courses lead on directly from the 2-hour Beginner Violin Class. It's possible to join the 10-week course directly, without coming to the 2-hour class, as the same material is covered in weeks 1 & 2 (but in more detail). However, many people like to come to the 2-hour Beginner Violin Class first, to get to know our teaching style before joining the full course.

Following the Beginnner Class, you'll be ready to get started on our Courses, which are available either by membership subscription or through our Coaching Program or Termly Enrolment. Our Learning Advisory team will follow up with you by email to answer any questions and help guide you to the right learning program.

Q: Where do I buy a violin?
A: We can guide you through the process of getting a violin for the first time - click through to our Beginner Setup process and we'll get you started from there. You can also find plenty of advice about finding a violin in our free online course, 'How To Get Started With The Violin'.

What You'll Learn in the Violin Fundamentals Classes

The Violin Fundamentals Classes will give you clarity about the first principles you need to know in order to play the violin well. You'll learn about:

How It Works

The classes are designed so that you learn intuitively – similar to how a child would learn a language.

During each lesson and live class, we cover a small but critical number of tasks (both technical and musical). We repeat them really efficiently until you have completely internalised them and they feel really natural for you to do.

What They Say

“I enjoyed the whole session. Thank you very much! Re-familiarizing myself with my violin, starting at scratch and going over the fundamentals… I just loved soaking it all in and the emphasis on the checklist before you start playing – posture etc. I’ve been trying to stand up straight ever since!”

- Leela, Violin Student

  • Know what to do next!

It seems amazing that a simple wooden box can move people in such profound ways!

If you’ve always dreamed of playing violin, I’m willing to bet that you have felt its emotional impact yourself.

You heard someone playing and wondered, ‘What if I could do that too?’

One of the most fulfilling things for me and my fellow teachers at ViolinSchool is meeting new students like you, who possess this burning desire to play the violin ...

... because I know that all we have to do is remove the obstacles and barriers that stand in your way!

It’s why so many of my students have excelled within months of joining ViolinSchool.

Here are some their stories:

You see, you don't need to start learning as a child in order to play the violin brilliantly.

In fact, it’s never too late for you to start ... you can achieve outstanding results at any age!

And I can help you prove it to yourself.

Whatever your age...whatever your skill level...

...YOU have the inbuilt ability to do this!

It’s startling what can happen when you let yourself succeed... when you put aside any limiting beliefs, and allow yourself the opportunity to try the violin.

That's exactly what BBC presenter Julian Marshall experienced when I showed him how to play a simple melody on the violin - live on BBC Radio.

Come and learn the Fundamentals of good violin playing!

Violin Fundamentals is a perfect 'taster' class if you'd like to see if the violin is right for you ... and an essential foundation if you've already committed to learning the violin!

Whether you're a first-time beginner, a restarter, or you already play the violin, you're about to discover how it’s possible to master the core principles of good violin playing in just a couple of hours, so you can play fluently, confidently and with ease.

Whatever your age, let me show you how to start playing the violin successfully in the quickest possible time!

At our London school, we offer two programs for Beginner violinists to choose from:

Live in London

Although a lot of what ViolinSchool does is online learning (our learners live all over the world), our HQ is here in Central London, and we'd be delighted to welcome you in person to any of our classes!

Our live Violin Fundamentals sessions run throughout the year here in London. You'll have instant access to the full video course too - so you can get started right away!

Chat with one of our learning advisors today, or send us a message using the contact form or by email. We'll be delighted to answer any questions you have about learning the violin.

Or, if you have a violin already and you'd like to get started now, then just click the big red button and you can be learning and playing in just a couple of minutes’ time.

Violin Playing is Complicated

Let’s face it, string instruments are a bit more complicated at the beginning than most other musical instruments. You can pluck a guitar string, or press the key of a piano, and get a decent sound pretty much straight away.

But with the violin, there’s so much to get right … the bow hold, the bowing arm, the angle of the violin, your posture … there are just lots of things that can get in the way of rapid progress.

Also, everyone’s body is different, so we need to personalise our playing technique to our own body. To do that effectively, guidance and personal feedback is essential!

Now, you could spend days (or, more likely, weeks!) trawling through online videos, reading articles and books, gathering all the techniques, working out all the different complexities that are unique to your body and posture, and then *eventually* - hopefully! - work things out by trial and error.

But instead, I want to persuade you to invest just a couple of hours of your time into our Violin Fundamentals program, and start making rapid progress with your playing straight away!

About the Violin Fundamentals

Let me tell you a bit more about the Fundamentals. It’s a unique short course that for many people is nothing short of transformational.

It consists of two live class sessions, which take place online, usually via Zoom. Or if you're able to visit the UK, you can even come and take part in the class offline at our school in London.

Alongside the live classes there is a series of online lessons, including interactive digital practice tools and backing tracks so that you can start making music immediately.

You get accountability from our super experienced Coaching Team, which includes an optional video assignment and a certificate when you complete the program.

Also, you don’t need to read music. The entire program is taught by ear, and focuses on the physical movements of playing. If you would like to read music, all the theory is included in our sequence of Beginner Courses, that follow on directly from the Fundamentals program.

If you’re able to visit us in person in London, you don’t even need a violin, as you can borrow one of ours for the live classes! If you’re learning remotely, you’ll obviously need access to a violin before you start.

If you need help with this, get in touch with us - ideally before you buy one online. It’s very easy to make the wrong choice when buying a violin, so we’ll be very happy to point you in the right direction!

Why it Works

The reason why Violin Fundamentals is so effective is that - instead of bombarding you with tips, tricks, and complicated techniques, we reduce everything down to the FIRST PRINCIPLES of good violin playing.

These are the universal ideas that are true for everyone - things like how you use and position your body, the balances that are needed for smooth bowing and good tone production, how to achieve a consistent sound, and much more.

We take you through a series of carefully designed activities that allow you find the balance of movements that works for *you*, so that you can be playing in time and in tune, and making a beautiful sound, in just a few hours.

We then practise the activities together until you’ve internalised them and they become completely natural to you. That’s how you make a complicated activity simple - by carefully drilling in all the different elements until they’re completely automatic.

That’s why we invite everyone who joins Violin Fundamentals to repeat the live classes as many times as you like. Because we know from experience that when you reinforce the core principles at a really deep level, your violin playing becomes far more consistent, and - frankly - better!

That’s what will give you true confidence and happiness when playing the violin, and sharing your music with others.

Get Started Today!

Most people complete the Violin Fundamentals program within a week or two, but you can zip through it in less than a day if you’re in a hurry.

You can buy the Fundamentals program on its own as a short course. Or, if you’re already committed to learning the violin, it’s included free with all of our 10 Week Beginner Courses.

Best of all, you can start at any time — we run live classes throughout the year, and because we include a free month of ViolinSchool membership too, you’ll have instant access to all our learning tools as soon as you sign up. Just click the big red registration button on the website, and you can get started straight away.

If you have any questions about Violin Fundamentals, the Beginner Violin Courses, or any of our programs, then please contact us today at [email protected], or via the website.
